But it will be the first time he will contest the poll with an Order of Australia medal, bestowed in the Australia Day Honours on January 26.
Councillor McInnes, of Radford, said he was honoured to be recognised for his service to agricultural show societies, the dairy industry and community.
"I must thank my family. I have a wife (Mary) and four daughters (Megan, Heather, Kirsten and Ruth) and they have been deprived of my company and time over the years because of my involvement in different organisations," he said.
"I enjoyed helping out.
"I suppose I did most for the local community and the dairy industry than other things and there have been times when I had to make tough decisions which did not please everybody.
"Someone once told me making the tough decisions is why some gets paid the big bucks but it is more about making decisions for the good of the majority and while I am certain not everyone was pleased, I hope I served the majority."
