The Griffith Swans hope to lure two-time Jim Quinn medallist Guy Orton back to the club next season. After announcing Adrian Pavese as the club’s new mentor last week, Swans president Jeff Harris revealed on Sunday his committee was working on getting former coach Orton back in the red and white. The champion midfielder played for the NT Thunder in the North East Australian Football League last season after four years at the Swans but is set to return to Griffith for work reasons. Harris said having a player the calibre of Orton back on deck would be a huge boost. “Guy’s overseas at the moment, but he’ll be back and moving down this way by November,” he said. “We would like to have him squared away and our list finalised in the next couple of weeks, but we’ll wait and see what happens.” Aside from Orton, one of the Swans’ top priorities is retaining the services of Josh Hamilton, who is being heavily courted by rival Riverina and Farrer League clubs. After confirming the losses of defender Tom Groves and ruckman Michael Griffiths last week, Harris said Hamilton’s experience and physicality would be valuable commodities. “He’s got a good footy background coming from Ovens and Murray and certainly adds some size and physicality to the side,” Harris said of Hamilton. “We’re certainly keen to keep him, but he has attracted a lot of interest from outside of us.” Harris said new coach Pavese was leaving recruitment duties to the Swans committee ahead of his arrival. “Structurally, he has a bit of input about the type of players he’d like for us to recruit,” he said. “But outside of that, he’s left it to the club to do that role.” Harris hopes to announce the Swans’ full coaching structure by the end of the month.
