FIVE years ago Roma-born Olympian Emilee Cherry never thought she would be playing rugby let alone becoming an Order of Australia medallist.
The 24-year-old has been recognised for her service to sport as a gold medallist in Australia’s Rugby Sevens Olympic team.
She said she had been focused on winning the Olympics for so long that she never thought of all the accolades that would follow it.
“I don’t think we realised the impact we had back here in Australia,” she said.
“Hearing those stories that we have inspired a nation, it’s one of the most humbling things.”
“It’s pretty incredible. It’s definitely not something i forsaw coming. It’s fallen all into place.”
Cherry was an Australia touch football representative from 2009 to 2011 when she was approached to switch to rugby sevens.
She has gone on to be a member of the winning World Rugby Women’s Sevens World Series team and was named the World Sevens Player of the Year in 2014.
