CHRISTMAS carols and the Boxing Day Test could be drowned out by the noise of thunder and lightning across Queensland.
Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Shane Kennedy said the forecast for Christmas included some showers and thunderstorms for large parts of the state.
"[There will be] possible severe thunderstorms in southern and central Queensland for the next few days," Mr Kennedy said.
"The primary risk of severe thunderstorms will be in Central Queensland over the weekend, particularly between Longreach and Emerald with the risk of heavy rainfall leading to flash flooding in the area.
"Mostly sunny conditions for the North East coast until Sunday when showers and thunderstorms will start to arrive from the west."
Mr Kennedy said a monsoon trough developing near the Northern Territory could bring some rain across to Queensland into next week.
"A monsoon trough has developed near the Northern Territory and is expected to be drawn over northern Queensland next week with a tropical low tracking across the state, potentially lingering near the east coast next week," he said.
"Widespread rainfall is possible across northern and eastern districts next week, dependent on the position and strength of the monsoon trough and low.
Temperatures are likely to be below average across the south east over the weekend, dropping back down to the high 20s."
Temperature news is not as positive for Western Queensland, with towns expected to stay in the high 30s and low 40s over Christmas and not cool down until next week.
