An exceptionally uniform draft of 140 bulls has been catalogued for the 20th anniversary of the MAGS Droughtmaster Sale on Friday, November 12, at the Dalrymple Saleyards, Charters Towers, from 10am.
Co-vendors Mac and Gayle Shann, Lamont stud, Cantaur Park, Clermont, and Kylie Graham and Mat Durkin, Mungalla stud, Farnham, Taroom, will be offering 124 Droughtmaster and 16 Charmaster bulls. Of the draft, a whopping 84 are homozygous polled (PP) and 41 are polled or polled/scurred.
Ms Graham said the Mungalla 2021 MAGS sale team, consisting of 51 mostly registered Droughtmaster bulls, is of a very high standard.
"The team is extremely consistent on type, boasting very high percentage of PP polled, exceptional temperaments, structure, fertility and productivity. Mungalla bulls are sourced from female lines that haven't compromised these traits for decades now," she said.
"Buyers can be confident in the product they buy from us, and this is reflected in the large number of repeat buyers we've maintained over many years."
Once again, Mungalla is presenting beautiful bulls from the sires that featured in the pedigrees of the high-priced sellers from 2020.
"These include four sons from Mungalla Fame, the sire of top priced MAGS 2020 bull, Lot 11 Mungalla 3325. Six sons of SC Leeroy, sire of the second-top price bull last year, as well as six sons of the highly-regarded Mungalla Falcon, and two sons of Mungalla Edgar, among the many other top Mungalla sires represented."
Lamont is offering a run of high-quality stud sire options and a large selection of top-quality herd bulls.
"We're focusing on weight for age, bone, soundness of structure, fertility and temperament. Quality progeny and weight for age puts the dollars in the pocket of the producer," Mrs Shann said.
In recent years, the Shanns have outlaid a substantial amount of money on sires, beginning with the purchase of Oasis Dundee, in 2017, for $135,000.
"His progeny were first sold last year and we have a strong representation of his sons in the team."
The Lamont draft consists of a variety of sires that the Shanns have purchased or bred and retained.
"Our sires were weighed off grass recently when getting vaccinated and averaged 1050kg, with a top of 1165kg for a homebred bull, Lamont Quartpot, by Lamont Ezey."
MAGS sale buyers come from all directions and all parts of Queensland.
"We've had a strong following in the west and north and a large number have been going to central Qld," Mr Shann said.
Through the years, the sale has provided buyers with a large selection of quality animals to choose from at an affordable price.
"These bulls haven't been over-pampered and are ready to work. Young bulls are helped along when needed, but have to maintain themselves on only grass when the season breaks. We feel this gives them a better constitution and longevity. We base ourselves on strong commercial criteria so that cattle producers can back our product, whether you're a stud or commercial breeder."
Mrs Shann said they were pleased with the 2020 sale result, and feel things are only getting better.
"Droughtmasters are the ultimate animal for the export market as they excel in weight, feed conversion, temperament and ability to handle tough and humid climates. These traits are also beneficial for producers selling to feedlots or who finish their cattle on grass."
Those who're unable to attend the sale in person can view and bid through the Elite Livestock Auctions online platform.
A bull walk will take place the day prior to the sale at the saleyards, with a meet and greet event to follow in the evening.
Prospective buyers are encouraged to inspect the bulls in the Lamont and Mungalla paddocks from now until sale day via appointment.
The sale catalogue will be available to view on the MAGS website from mid-October. Hard copies can be posted out by contacting the vendors.
Ms Graham said MAGS provides a great opportunity to catch up with old friends and to meet new ones while being able to select from the highest quality seed stock to be presented in the North.
"See you at MAGS!"
