While Queensland's border opening to Victoria and Greater Sydney allowed the desperately needed workers to fill hundreds of positions in the Balonne region, the capacity of short-term rental accommodation has been reduced due to COVID-19 restrictions.
The fewer available spaces have quickly filled with the influx, and now growers are searching for new places to house their workers.
It is a second blow for the Balonne horticultural industry; last month growers feared their produce would rot in the fields due to closed borders creating a shortage of pickers who would usually come in from Victoria while following the annual harvest trail.
The region's farmers are calling out to the local community for a helping hand: asking any residents with space in their homes to consider billeting a seasonal worker for the summer.
St George Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association member and co-owner of Riversands Wines David Blacket said billeting is not customary for St George, but in a year which has been anything but normal it was a creative solution.
"We have worked even harder this year to get a labour force into the region and have tried our best to break down barriers that would stop pickers getting here, so when the borders opened it was a huge relief for us," Mr Blacket said.
"Picking will start in the coming weeks and there is still a need for more workers, but the more immediate need is to find housing for those who are arriving to work the harvest.
"Billeting workers with residents in the community isn't something growers here would normally do, but we are facing exceptional circumstances.
"We hope a few locals might come out of the woodwork - it would really make a difference."
It is believed a little community spirit can go a long way, and Balonne Shire Mayor Samantha O'Toole has reiterated the message from St George's growers.
"If some community members can raise their hand to help in a small way, we know that is going to make a big difference for our growers and workers this season," she said.
"Balonne Shire Council is putting out the call on behalf of all producers in our area whose workers need a place to live.
"We pride ourselves on being a welcoming community and it would be fantastic if those residents who have a little space could billet even one seasonal worker during this season."
Balonne Shire Council is providing information about billeting and relevant COVID-19 regulations on behalf of fruit and vegetable growers in the region.
