Stanthorpe local James Massey has been awarded an OAM in the Queen's Birthday Honours for services to the community - in particular for his work with the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services.
Mr Massey said his recognition was a great honour and he was very humbled by it.
"I have been very active in the community for the past 47 years, and had some great mentors in my family who bought me up to do the right thing," he said.
Mr Massey said his wife of 40 years, Lorraine, and his four children had been incredibly understanding about his community involvement - "particularly when I walk out our door in my yellow high-visibility gear to fight fires".
Among Mr Massey's many achievements, he has been the first officer at Sugarloaf Rural Fire Brigade since 2010, foundation member since 1994, and brigade chairman over two terms in 2007-2010 and and 2004-2005.
He has also been secretary of the Stanthorpe Combined Group, and deputy group officer, and treasurer since 2018.
Mr Massey was a member of the Liston Rural Fire Brigade from 1973 to 1994.
He is an active member of the Rotary Club of Stanthorpe, and served as international director from 2006 to 2007.
His other community involvement includes the Stanthorpe Agricultural Society, which he has been a member of since 1978, and is the former chairman of the fat cattle committee.
He also is a compere at the show and at the Stanthorpe Apple and Grape Harvest Festival.
Mr Massey was a foundation member and chairman, ArtWorks on Davadi (now ArtWorks Granite Belt) from 2011 to 2013.
