The annual Australian Brangus Cattle Association Carcass Competition is on again and organisers say it could be the biggest one yet.
Australian Brangus Cattle Association board member Edward Quinn said there had been 160 steers entered in the competition, now in its fourth year, with 10 vendors involved.
"It's one of the largest we've had," he said.
"Last year would have been bigger but we had a few pull out last moment because of rain.
"In the first couple of years it's hard to get going but hopefully it's starting to become more well-known.
"Ten vendors is the most we have had."
The steers are judged on weight gain and carcase eating ability.
During Brangus Month in August, the prime cuts will be served up to diners at Bracken Ridge Tavern, Yeppoon Sailing Club and Rocky Sports Club.
A field day will be held at Waterfall Feedlot, Goomeri on June 19. This will be the only viewing opportunity for the steers unless arranged with Waterfall Feedlot or the ABCA Carcass Competition Committee.
Terry Nolan will purchase the steers on entry to the feedlot, with the cattle to be killed at Nolan's Meats, Gympie.
Mr Quinn said the field day was a good opportunity for producers to see the competition and he hoped plenty of people would come along.
"We're trying to expand it more and more each year," he said.
"Michael White from Bracken Ridge Tavern came last year and it's great to see producers and restauranteurs have the chance to come together."
There are two classes for entry this year– Brangus purebred steers and Brangus crossbred steers and Mr Quinn said entries were pretty evenly split between the two categories.
"I'd love to see some more commercial operators get involved, even if they are Brangus crosses," he said.
Winners will be announced at the awards dinner which will be held on August 7 at the Bracken Ridge Tavern, Brisbane.
