The passing of Alison Johnson on January 15, has left those who knew her with a heavy heart, which was strongly reflected at her funeral in Toowoomba last week.
The late Alison Johnson was born Robyn Alison Bruce in on October 21, 1941 in Toowoomba. She was the younger of two children born to Robert and Doris Bruce. She was a sister to older brother Peter.
When her secondary education was completed Alison attended Kelvin Grove Teachers Training College where she was trained in Home Science.
In 1963, Alison was assigned to be the Home Science teacher at Wallumbilla with additional regular days at Surat.
Alison was a very happy and warm person and people responded to her very quickly, and so began her transition from city girl to the warmest of country woman.
It was through the Methodist minister from Roma invited the young church group from Wallumbilla to attend tea at the Parsonage after Sunday night’s church that she met her future husband Clyde.
Clyde and Alison were engaged two months later in September and married on the 15th January 1966 at St Stephens in Toowoomba.
After their marriage they lived at Norolle, Roma, and moved into their own house shortly before their daughter Julie was born in 1969 followed by Kirrily born in 1972, and Greg in 1974.
Alison’s was heavily involved in community activities including the Hodgson Memorial Hall, Queensland Gelbvieh Society, Poll Hereford Junior Heifer Show, Queensland Poll Hereford Society and the Poll Her’s Association.
But always at the centre of her existence was Alison the wife, the parent, the mother and all her creativity and energy went into the establishment of a home, an oasis for the family. She was a strong matriarchal figure for her family, as well as being a protector and director of her children.
Beyond this, Alison had a major role in the Norolle Poll Hereford Stud.
She was responsible for the production of the annual sale catalogue demonstrating her competence with photography and computers. Day to day it was always team Johnson, Alison and Clyde when it came to the decisions and administration of the business.
In 2002, Norolle was sold and Clyde and Alison moved to Millmerran to a smaller property where they continued to breed stud cattle.
In 2013, the property was sold and Clyde and Alison moved into Millmerran to begin their retirement. Again Alison cultivated her flowers here.
Wherever Alison went she quickly became involved in the activities of the local community, and again Millmerran was no exception.
Alison will be remembered for being competent, happy and her warmth.
Her farewell was held before a large gathering at Burstows Chapel, Toowoomba, on Tuesday, January 22, 2019.
Alison is survived by her husband Clyde, children Julie, Kirrily and Greg, their partners, and grand children.
