A sizable crowd of cattle producers showed interested in the four different female breeds on offer at this year’s Dalby Stud Female Sale held on Saturday.
The event included the a major reduction sale of Paul and Susan Murray’s Yarrum Droughtmaster stud cow herd at Dalby’s stud cattle selling complex.
Overall, the Murray family’s Yarrum stud, Inverell, NSW sold 26 cows and calves, 14 joined heifers and 19 unjoined heifers with the female sale achieving a 96 per cent clearance rate overall.
The Yarrum Droughtmaster stud topped the sale with Droughtmaster Yarrum 134 D5 (P) cow plus bull calf at foot that sold to $5250.
The seven-year-old cow has calved four times including her current calf and was sired by Yarrum Calgary D5 (P), while the 13-month-old bull calf at foot was by Yarrum 112 bull.
The polled Yarrum 134 cow and calf unit was snapped by Alex Gibbon’s Stonebridge Droughtmaster Stud, Mallanganee, NSW. The cow has currently been running with Yarrum 112 bull as well.
Overall, the Yarrum Droughtmaster Stud averaged $2950 for the 26 cows and calves sold, while the 14 Yarrum joined heifers averaged $2055 with 100 per cent clearance rate.
A top price was reached twice for the joined female section of the sale with lot 42 Glenlands D 10/1633 D5 (P) cow reaching $2500 and selling to Chris Turner’s Maunsell Park Droughtmaster Stud, Tamaree. The seven-year-old cow was sired by Glenlands Leading Edge D5 (P) and has been joined to Yarrum Hatch bull.
Meanwhile, joined female lot 52 Yarrum 227 D5 (P) also sold to $2500 and was purchased by Pat Flynn and Emma Thompson’s Auzdown Droughtmaster, Warwick. The five-year-old female was sired by Yarrum Ambrose D5 (S) (AI) and has been artificially inseminated to Cungelella Farmhand bull.
A stud Charolais cow and calf, Yuranga Park Goldie (AI) (P/S) red factor cow with five-month-old bull calf at foot, was offered by Mitchell Lollback, Yuranga Park, Allora and sold to $2500 during the sale.
The cow’s bull calf was sired by Yuranga Park Kurrajong and the package sold to Peter and Michelle Mearns, Boondooma. The Goldie cow was by French sire Virgil 4240983344 (P) and pregnancy tested in calf to Yuranga Park Norbit bull.
Stud Angus females, McGregor’s K19 cow with three-and-half month old bull calf at foot and McGregor’s Lucy L2 cow with three-month-old bull calf at foot, were offered by Shane McGregor, AKW Angus, Bell and sold $2500.
The two bull calves at foot of the Angus cows were sired by Te Mania Faull F177 bull with the two females bought by the Gaffney family, Graneta Angus, Bell.
David Taylor, Baroona Park, Wellcamp offered two stud Murray Grey unjoined females at the sale with them both selling to $2000. The first heifer, lot 7 Baroona Park Celene (PB), was sired by Baroona Park Saxon and was 23-months-old plus purchased by the Logan family, Yarraman. The second Murray Grey heifer was lot 8 Kingsgrove Marigold (PB) (AI) who was 16-months-old and by Western Australian sire, Monterey Sundowner (PB), plus also bought by the Logan family.
The Yarrum Droughtmaster unjoined heifers sold to $1750 for Yarrum 374 D5 (P) and was purchased by the Swan family, Moura. The Swan family were also the volume buyer at the sale taking home 13 lots for a total of $33,000. Overall, the unjoined heifers averaged $1290/head during the sale.
