Considered one of the greatest horse events in Australia, the 36th annual Cloncurry Stockman’s Challenge and Campdraft is expected to draw an elite slate of competitors from across the nation to the Cloncurry Equestrian Centre from Thursday, July 12 to Sunday, July 15.
Event secretary Stacey Robertson said nominations for this year’s Challenge will open in June, and she’s confident numbers will be similar to 2017’s record level of entries.
“Returning events include the Invitational Open Draft which was held for the first time last year and was a big hit with spectators.
“It was great to be able to watch many of the past Stockman’s Challenge winners competing against one another,” Stacey said.
She said the event will offer spectators and competitors alike, four spectacular days of live entertainment, top flight action in the ring, and a great chance to catch-up with old mates and make new ones along the way.
Further adding to the appeal of attending the Challenge this year, spectators will be allowed to camp out on the Equestrian Centre grounds over the course of the event. For enquiries please email stockmanschallenge@hotmail.com.
The popular Quamby Rodeo is set to once again create a hive of activity through the tiny settlement situated 44km from Cloncurry when the annual rodeo takes place on Saturday, July 28.
Quamby All Sports Association committee member Allan Abdy said all the usual rodeo events will be held allowing competitors of various abilities to try their hand at bull riding and bronc riding, and timed events such as steer wrestling and barrel racing.
“Junior events such as mutton busting and a poddy calf ride give the juniors a chance to gain some valuable experience as well,” he said.
After the rodeo finishes be sure to get amongst it at the night time auction, and then party late into the night with your mates, before pulling out your swag at the free camping facilities.
The Curry Merry Muster Festival will take center stage in the town from Friday, August 3 to Sunday, August 5, providing the more than 7000 visitors expected with three days of pulse-pounding non-stop rodeo action, top-flight entertainment and oodles of fun for the young and the young-at-heart.
Festival committee secretary Carlie Remfrey said a vast slate of events has been planned for the 64th annual event which kicks off on the Friday morning with the Bush Poets Breakfast and Teddy Bears Picnic at Mary Kathleen Park.
“Later in the morning, the gates to the Cloncurry Equestrian Centre will open with the APRA Junior Rodeo set to get the competitive events off to a great start; it will be followed by the first performance of the APRA Pro Rodeo in the evening and the street parade,” Carlie said.
“The Xtreme Bull Ride which made its debut last year to great acclaim will also return to the Cloncurry Showgrounds on the Friday night.
“On Saturday the APRA Pro Rodeo will continue with the winners to be named once the dust settles. And on Sunday we’ll have the ATRA Roping Day taking place.”
There will be street stalls, and bar and food stands operating during the festival along with fantastic family entertainment and live music.
More details on event nominations will be available closer to the 2018 event.
