Anthony Hyland, GDL St George told me that the season around St George and district has turned around very quickly on the back of strong early rain measuring anywhere from 65ml to 195ml for October. He said that you only had to travel 60km to the west and south west where falls were on the lighter end with only 35-45ml, however country that has had the good falls has responded quickly and producers will now be able to hold on to stock and obtain some weight gain. Anthony indicated that many producers were holding on to as many heifers as possible to try to build up numbers next year if the season hopefully permits. He said that the lamb and mutton prices are still very strong with lambs on hook trading well above $6.30, mutton at $4.20 dressed and lightweight lambs selling from $6.80 to $7.40/kg dressed.
