The Australasian Team Roping Association (ATRA) are busily preparing for the upcoming National Finals weekend, the pinnacle event of the ATRA sporting year.
Over 300 competitors will head to the Capella Indoor Arena in the Queensland Central Tablelands for three days from Thursday, September 28 to Sunday, October 1, to crown the national champion and celebrate the time and dedication competitors put into their horses, the sport and the industry.
ATRA president Tony Lilyman is looking forward to this year’s event which he said is shaping up to be the biggest and best so far.
“An increase in membership numbers across the country has brought an influx of competitors, not only to our weekend events, but to our showcased fixture – The National Finals,” he said.
Competitors will vie for $20,000 in prize money, two Kara Kar trailers for the highest points scorers, 10 championship trophy saddles and Rockin W Ranch championship trophy buckles.
Events to be held include: Open Team Roping; #12 Team Roping; #10 Team Roping; #8 Team Roping; #6 Team Roping; Ladies Breakaway Roping; 3D Barrel Race; All Girls Team Roping; Century Team Roping; Junior Breakaway Roping; 13 – 17 Years Barrel Race; 8 – 12 Years Barrel Race; 7 and Under Barrel Race and Junior Looper.
ATRA has been operating for 10 years and is a member based organisation created to provide the opportunity for individuals to participate and compete in the unique and challenging sport of team roping.
Team roping is one of the fastest growing horse sports in the world and ATRA promoters now host more than 100 events a year across Australia and New Zealand.
