NORTH Queensland producer Gavin Scott, Rosetta Grazing Company, Collinsville said Brahrock MS Platinum Elmo 5668 (IVF ) (P) was ‘the best poll heifer he has ever seen’ and was prepared to pay $34,000 for the unjoined grey heifer at the Gympie Brahman Female Sale on Saturday.
The 16-month-old daughter of Three D Platinum (P) from the proven JDH Mr Elmo Manso female in Brahrock Miss Elmo Power 5291 (P) was described by Mr Scott as having the ideal combination of beef, bone and temperament.
“It’s very hard to buy poll females with such bone structure and beef qualities and if you throw in her temperament it was a real bonus,” said Mr Scott.
Landmark auctioneer Mark Scholes, Rockhampton said she was an exceptional heifer, not just her pedigree but her overall conformation, breed character and has all the attributes you would want in a Brahman female with the added bonus of being polled.
“She also comes from an extremely fertile dam line which has consistently produced high-priced progeny including her half-sister which sold for $29,000 recently,” Mr Scholes said.
The excellent sale result reflected the good season, confidence in the cattle market and the outstanding quality of the Gympie catalogue, he added.
Dan Sullivan, principal, Sullivan Livestock and Rural Services, Gympie said the quality of the yarding had improved dramatically, especially in recent years with the better end selling above vendor expectations.
“The Gympie sale has developed into one of the leading outlets for quality Brahman cattle and through improved genetics and IVF/embryo transfer programs this sale now attracts competition from a much wider audience which was underpinned by a strong local buyer bench and northern and interstate buyers,” said Mr Sullivan.
Brahrock MS Platinum Elmo was sold by Royce and Beryl Sommerfeld, Brahrock Brahmans, Maryborough who delivered another consistent sale performance after selling their eight females for the leading average of $9100.
Neville and Shannon Sommerfeld, Brahrock N Brahmans sold the $15,000 second top money heifer, Brahrock N MS Elroy Marri 131, a quality unjoined grey daughter of NCC Elroy which was bought by Ken and Wendy Cole, Kenrol Brahmans, Gracemere.
Earlier in the day, the Cole family, also outlaid the $10,000 top red money for Muan Diplomate 5356 (P), a superb, 15-month-old unjoined NCC Skoda daughter offered by Len Gibbs, Muan Pastoral, Biggenden.
Competition was solid throughout the catalogue and was particularly strong on the draft of six, FBC A Milton Manso 136A unjoined grey heifers sold on account of Gary Hiette, Barambah Brahmans, Darts Creek which averaged $7333 and sold to a top of $9500 for Barambah Bridie Manso 211 which was bought by Ian and Debbie Frampton, Little Creek Brahman stud, Biggenden.
Almost three quarters of the catalogue were grey Brahman females and they met with the strongest competition after 71 females averaged $4655 while the 25 red Brahman females averaged $3960.
Two major bulk buyers were active with the Echo Hills Cattle Company securing seven females for a $2214 average and Alan and Malvene Logan, Upper Yarraman, bought 10 females for $51,000 including Barambah Indigo Manso 188 for $9000.
