Both girls began boarding at Rockhampton Grammar School this year, and said they jumped at the chance to become involved in the show team.
Coming from beef cattle backgrounds, Rena and Lauren said being part of the team meant they were able to go to the school farm twice a week, and stay involved in the industry they love.
The school was unable to bring show steers to Marlborough after the flooding impacted the operations at Belmont Research Station, and the school farm is currently without a loading ramp.
However both girls entered in the young judges.
Lauren said her only experience with judging was a couple of years ago, but said they had been covering the basics at school.
“I’ll be looking to see if they’re fat enough, and have good hocks, and with good body structure,” she said.
Rena agreed, and said she was looking forward to competing with the rest of the school team.
While Rena was unsure what she wanted to do once she left school, Lauren said she had a plan to work with country animals.
