The NT and northern Australian cattle industry is mainly reliant on international live export and domestic value add supply chains, Northern Territory Cattlemen’s Association (NTCA) CEO Tracey Hayes said.
“The Australian, WA, Qld and NT governments are working together on initiatives to develop Northern Australia,” Ms Hayes said.
“The NTCA is of the view there is an opportunity to develop a Northern Australian Beef Industry Strategic Plan to complement the Northern Australian focus and to position for the future,” she said.
She said at the national level the industry is challenged by increased complexity and costs of doing business while Northern Australia suffers from a perennial lack of investment in enabling infrastructure and innovation to drive future prosperity and development.

“International trends in consumer demand are driving a new set of opportunities for the beef sector in Australia, while the international trading environment and Australia’s position as a market leader is meeting significant challenge.
“It is reasonable to expect increased volatility in the international market with increasing protectionist sentiment and increasing competition from emerging protein producers in South America and the subcontinent for processed and live products.”
Ms Hayes said the northern Australian beef industry has a number of advantages including scale, innovation and enterprise, access to quality land, water and pasture, and proximity to the fastest growing, most populous region of the world.

“While these characteristics may not automatically translate to success they will come increasingly into focus as levers for future growth. How we use these and other levers will determine what that future looks like. The NTCA has started discussions with stakeholders to gain support to develop a strategic plan.
Ms Hayes said the plan will set a pathway for the sustainable development and growth of the northern Australian beef industry for the next ten years.
