Beef fertility and cents per kilo are the key attributes Kenilworth principals Kelvin and Margaret Maloney, Mt Coolon, will be looking for in the bulls and heifers catalogued for the February All Breeds sale this year.
The Maloneys purchased the top price female at the 2016 sale, Kenrol Seren D 2738 (S), by Elrose Barocca (P) offered by Ken and Wendy Cole, Kenrol Stud, Gracemere.
Margaret said the granddaughter of the triple crown winner, Kenrol Serendipity 042 (ET) (H) has proven to be a great addition to their breeding herd, and has been highly productive.
With over 50 years of breeding fertile, functional and productive cattle, it’s not by chance that Kenilworth principals Kelvin and Margaret Maloney, Mt Coolon have forged a reputation with clients for producing quality cattle throughout northern Queensland and the Northern Territory.
The 16,000 hectare Kenilworth Station situated between Charters Towers and Clermont, is family owned and operated and runs between 2000 to 2500 head depending on seasonal conditions.
Kelvin and his parents first arrived at the newly formed block in December 1966, and Kelvin and Margaret were married in May 1967.
“The first two semi loads of Brahman bulls purchased for Kenilworth came from Albert Smith and Merv Kuhl, Glen Coe Brahman Stud in 1967. The first poll bulls to arrive at Kenilworth were in the truck from Albert Smith,” Margaret said.
As the years went by, the Maloneys success with producing poll bulls became increasingly evident, and they haven’t used or purchased a horn bull for the herd since the early 1970’s.
The Kenilworth herd is consistently placed under pressure for performance, productivity and fertility. Every breeder must wean a calf every year.
“We’re always trying to achieve better beef, length, bone and muscling, fertility and temperament in our herd, poll cattle we’ve purchased over the years at the February All Breeds Sale, has gone a long way to helping us realise our ambitions.
“We believe well handled, quality cattle will always have a market.”
