It was great to hear some positive news from the north last week. My old mate Sam Daniels of Brodie & Co, Cloncurry, informed me of some decent rain falling over the past week.

The Burke, Mount Isa and Normanton Shires all received rain. Although a bit patchy, most areas received 40 – 100mm for the week.
Sam also informed me that there has been a steady flow of export cattle heading through Cloncurry to Darwin with similar rates to last year – steers weighing 260kg – 380kg making 345c/kg, and heifers weighing 260kg – 360kg making 325c/kg.
Most processors are preparing to start for the year and it appears the opening prices will be similar to those at the end of 2016.
With the forecast of rain over the next 10 days for the area, things are off to a positive start for 2017.
Magic Millions sale and race day
The Gold Coast Magic Millions yearling sale is being held from January 11 to 17 with the Jeep Magic Millions Gold Coast Raceday at the Gold Coast Turf Club on Saturday.
My early memories of the Magic Millions are of the Golden Nugget sale and race concept being started around 1980 by my old mates Carl Waugh, Gordon McNicol and Mick Kruger.
This then went on to become under their stewardship the Magic Millions Race Day and Sale around the middle 1980s.
These illustrious men really put the Gold Coast and Queensland on the map for the racing industry both sales and racing.
Look at the world-wide attention the Magic Millions Sale and Race Day has created this week.
