Billy Goetsch is no ordinary 13-year-old.
The all-rounder Kalbar boy is a very talented cattle farmer, horse rider and auctioneer.
Having an endless line of trophies, awards and ribbons from competitions in which he won a number of places for his prime and led cattle at local shows, his most recent win was at this year’s Ekka.
Billy competed in the Royal Queensland Show carcase competition and won first place in the Lightweight Champion Carcasse and the Eating Quality Award in the Led Steer section.
“I’m proud and happy every time I win,” he said.
“It’s good to know that all the hard work that I’ve put into the animals has paid off.”
Billy said breeding and preparing cattle took a lot of money and time.
“I have to feed them, wash them, clip them and break them in and look after them,” he said.
“It takes about a whole year to do all that.
“I pitch in with the money I win to feed the cattle, buy the grain they eat and product.
“That all goes into the animals.”
Despite admitting that his endeavours were hard work, Billy said he loved it and could not wait until next year’s Ekka.
“I want to show my led steers and Limousin cows next year,” he said.
“We like to mix breeds.
“I mixed Speckle Park and Limousin cross (to make led steers).
“It’s got everything in there.
“The colour and the muscle pattern, and the meat is good.”
Growing up watching his parents show cattle for years sparked an interest in being a part of the family business at an early age for Billy.
“My mum and dad had a fitting service since I was a little kid so I was always wanted to do it,” he said.
“It’s really interesting and fun to do.”
His father Neil Goetsch is a livestock auctioneer and, with his wife Rachel Goetsch, has been producing cattle and entering prime cattle competitions at country shows for years.
Billy has also followed in his father’s footsteps and has tried his hand at auctioning.
This year, he won the Young Auctioneers competition at the Limousin Youth camp and has won the Boonah Show Young Auctioneer’s competition for the past two years.
His mother Rachel Goetsch said he was a “good little auctioneer”.
“Billy always receives a lot of praise from the crowd,” Ms Goetsch said.
“He often auctioneers a few lots at some auctions to let his father Neil have a breather.”
When Billy isn’t showing cattle or helping out at an auction, he is either playing rugby league or campdrafting with his grandfather.
This year, he competed and won first place at Rathdowney Campdraft, Boonah Show Campdraft and Beaudesert Campdraft.
