With feedlots offering up to 700c/kg liveweight for 350kg Wagyu store steers, and F1 Wagyu/Angus weaners selling as high 760c/kg on AuctionsPlus last week, more cattlemen are looking to infuse Wagyu bloodlines within their breeding herds.
AuctionsPlus quoted Mungallala listed Wagyu/Angus F1 steers aged 12 to 14 months weighing 276kg selling for 760c/kg to return $2100head.
A similar result was achieved for a line of Roma listed Wagyu/Anugs F1 steers weighing 365kg, selling for 680c/kg to return $2480, while the heifer portion sold for 655c/kg and 668c/kg depending on weight.
The popularity of the breed was evidenced at the field day curtain raiser to the Australian Wagyu Association’s annual general meeting at Jondaryan this week, attended by more than 160 people.
The highlight of the field day was a visit to the Hart family’s Kerwee Feedlot, followed by a workshop on the use of Breedplan performance recording.
