IT WAS Burenda Kilt K833 who stole the show at the Burenda Angus and Brangus sale in Clermont on Thursday, making $14,000 under the hammer.
With a sale gross of $484,500 and an average of $7570, the sale achieved a 98 per cent clearance rate under the hammer, but went on to sell 100 per cent after the sale concluded.
Top priced buyer was Bernard Anderson, Narrien, Clermont, who bought Kilt K833 for $14,000.
The 24-month-old Brangus Kilt K833 boasted 916kg of red meat, an average daily weight gain of 1.23kg and a scrotal circumference of 37cm.
Closely following was the Corack Cattle Co, Corack, Meandarra, who bought the 862kg Burenda Khiu K819, also Brangus, for $13,500.
Mr Anderson, who runs a commercial operation breeding grass-fattened cattle for the EU market, said Kilt K833 was exactly the sort of bull he came to the sale looking for.
“He’s just a smooth-coated bull, we’re chasing heifer bulls and we can trust the information that we’ve been supplied from the stud,” he said.
“We’re after plenty of fat cover, we fatten for the PCAS/EU markets so the bulls we picked out we think will do the job for us.”
Mr Anderson also bought three Angus bulls from Burenda earlier this year at their Roma sale.
Burenda manager Jonathan Schmidt said he was thrilled with the sale results, which were exceptionally better than last year’s sale which averaged between $4600 and $4700.
He said the amount of repeat buyers was humbling, and said the sale exceeded his expectations, with the Brangus bulls performing much better than the Angus.
“While Angus is our main focus, we do the Brangus because there’s obviously those clients who need a bit of the Bos Indicus, we think the high Angus content Brangus cattle are the ones that are suitable for that,” he said.
While Mr Schmidt said he is “not much of a judge”, he said both of the two top-priced bulls were favourites of his before the sale.
“They’re just good bulls with length and good coats - which are the good attributes for the market up here,” he said.
The volume buyer of the day hailed from the far north, with Curr Pastoral Company, Springvale, Laura, travelling for the sale to purchas five lots for an average of $4200 and a gross of $21,000.
Also buying big was Mr Anderson (four lots, $47,000 gross, averaging $11,750), LKH Grazing, Wynyard, Clermont (four lots, $38,500 gross, averaging $9625), Lunar Pastoral, Weeallah, St George, (four lots, $37,000 gross, averaging $9250), the Schneider family, Yaamba (four lots, $33,500 gross, averaging $8375), Rostron Grazing, Mt Pleasant Station, Hughenden (four lots, $29,000 gross, averaging $7250), and The Grove, Alpha (four lots, $24,000 gross, averaging $6000), Johnson Pastoral,
