Vendors are celebrating the great prices achieved at the inaugural Dalby Beef Bonanza prime and store cattle sale, at the Dalby Saleyards.
A total of 1100 cattle were yarded and sold by local agents Ray White Eastern Rural.
It was a pen of 12 Charolais/Brahman cross steers exhibited and sold by Jim and Ann Kennedy, Ashwell, Bell, that claimed the champion exhibit award.
These steers were bought as weaners back in January, and were bred by Greg and Margaret Hayes, Figland Brahmans, Kyogle, NSW.
They are out of purebred Brahman cows, and sired by Palgrove Charolais genetics, and they weighed 317kg at the time of sale.
Today, they weighed 475kg, and sold for 380c/kg, to return the Kennedys $1803/head.
Mrs Kennedy said that while they knew the market s would be strong, they were surprised to get the championship accolade.
Also smiling was Travis Luscombe, Travis Luscombe Show Steers and Livestock, Toowoomba, who exhibited champion single exhibit.
His entry, a 13-month-old Limousin cross steer weighed 570kg and sold for 376c/kg to return $2144/head.
Travis earlier this year bought the steer from the Toowoomba saleyards, with the view to show him as a led steer.
“However the steer had other ideas,” Travis said.
“He had an unruly attitude and lasted one outing at the Kalbar show.
“Once I heard about this event, he was earmarked, and I fed him for 120 days on grain.”
The champion grain fed exhibit was exhibited by Neville Hartwig and Kirsten Bliss, Rocky Cave, Goombungee.
John Campbell, Barramornie, Condamine, claimed the champion domestic feeder steer award.
Ray White Easter Rural livestock manager, Peter Bird, congratulated vendors on the quality cattle presented.
“The market was strong and the results speak for themselves,” he said.
Queensland Country Life will publish a full report next week.
