A ROUSING start to the 2016 Brahman stud competition saw Riuna Red Brahmans, exhibiting Riun Elegance 557/6, take home junior champion female last Thursday.
Judge Col Brett from the Northern Territory was suitably impressed by the young heifer, declaring her ‘nearly as beautiful’ as his wife.
“She’s a humdinger of a heifer,” Mr Brett said.
“She’s well-balanced, good-boned and everything is right about her.”
Sired by Ncc Delacruz and out of Riuna Elegance 504/3, the 10-month-old heifer was exhibited by Bundaberg-based breeder Bevan Glasgow who was floored with the win.
“This is the biggest win I’ve ever had – I’m absolutely on top of the world,” Mr Glasgow said, adding it was unusual to see the youngest in the competition to be awarded the top prize.
“She comes from a long line – we bred both her mother, grand and great-grandmother and they’re all been very good producers.”
Home-grown bull Viva Mario took home the top honours at the show, awarded grand champion bull.
Proudly exhibited by Pam and Alistair Davison, Viva Brahmans, Middlemount, the win comes off the back of his win at World Brahman Congress where he picked up the gong for both the senior bull and grand champion prizes.
Mr Davison said he was ‘over the moon’ with the win.
“He’s three generations of Australian-bred Brahman and we’re very pleased with how today went.”
The Davison family said will be retaining Viva Mario with 15 cows already preg-tested in calf to him this season.
“We have his semen available through Rocky Repro and he will definitely be staying in our stud.”
Mr Brett added Viva Mario, who weighed in at 1196kg and recorded an EMA of 148 sq cm, was an ‘magnificent’ exhibit.
“He is truly an outstanding representative of the breed,” Mr Brett said.
“I love the way he carries himself so well with all the weight he has.
“He has wonderful length and bone and thickness throughout as well as having the perfect temperament.”
Associate judge Simon Kinbacher added the competition overall showed a very good line up of Brahman cattle with the grand champion a stand out.
Rockhampton’s Raglan Brahmans were awarded junior champion bull with their exhibit Raglan Mr Mason 2280.
Sired by Raglan’s own Raglan Mr Mac and out of Raglan Miss 1175, the young bull weighed in at 756kg with the judge commenting on the strong attributes of the breed.
“This bull just goes to show the great sires we’ve got in the industry and the potential for the future.”
Grand champion female was awarded to Gracemere’s Kenrol Lady Rae Lee 2718F
Exhibited by Kenrol Brahman Stud’s Ken and Wendy Cole, the senior champion is by Kenrol Mr Hj Ray 0366 and out of Kenrol Condalessa.
Mrs Cole said it was exciting to see all the hard work pay off at competition time.
