The Office of Groundwater Impact Assessment (OGIA) has today released the long awaited draft Surat Underground Water Impact Report 2016.
Landholders can search the report using their bore registration number to see if it will be affected by coal seam gas production.
The 259-page report has found that of the 22,500 water bores in the study area (the majority privately operated), 469 may be affected by natural gas production. The data has been collected from 491 monitoring points.
The local gas industry has been quick to welcome the report with APPEA director Chris Lamont noting that the research shows Queensland CSG operations will produce 26 per cent less water over the life of industry than previously estimated.
He also said the number of bores affected represented an “11 per cent reduction on OGIA’s 2012 report”.
Mr Lamont said the industry would continue to be proactive in liaising with owners of potentially affected bores to discuss make-good arrangements for water supply if required.
