DESPITE a sunny outlook and stellar line-up of bulls, buying was tight at the annual Sunstate Angus Bull Sale in Warwick on Friday.

Pre-sale consensus indicated some of the best bulls 100 to grace the Sunstate sale, yet tough times in the cattle industry were obvious as buyers saw 38 animals passed in and 9 scratched from the program.
A whopping 18 vendors supplied the lots, with many left disappointed on the day.
Chinchilla buyer Ken Knudsen - on behalf of father-in-law Bill Bright, Cashmere West, St George - proved a great boost to the sale, taking home 11 quality bulls in all.
Prices for the sale averaged at $4037, with the top price of $8,000 taken by Ben and Joe Hill, Bulliac Angus, Miles.
Also the marketing coordinator for the Sunstate Angus Group, Ben said the sale was an indicator of the current cattle climate.
“The sale was very tough and it was quite disappointing to see the average and particularly the clearance drop as low as it did,” Ben said.
“There were some really great bulls that were either ran in or only made the base rate.”
Regardless of a tough sale felt by most vendors, Ben said he is pleased with his top price bull, Bulliac Gervais G88, sired by Sitz Jackson 431T.
“We were really happy with the calf and have been impressed with him since he was a weaner,” he said. Queensland Country Life’s Alison Francis witnessed the buying action.
