A modest crowd braved the heat at last week’s inaugural Clermont Santa Gertrudis Bull Sale to see 41 bulls sell for an average of $4866. The sale, previously held at Charters Towers, was moved to Clermont due to ongoing dry conditions in the north and west, and once again included leading studs Yarabee, Yarrawonga, Waco, KM, Redrock and Diamond H, as well as first time vendors Canowindra, Cardona and Broadleaf studs.
Topping the sale at $11,500 was the Bassingthwaighte family’s Yarrawonga K62, a 27-month-old son of Yarrawonga Avenger. The classified S bull, which weighed in at 893kg giving him a daily weight gain of 1.08kg, measured 130sq.cm in the eye muscle area, 9mm P8 and 7mm rib fat and a scrotal circumference of 36cm. The sire sold to Peter Black and Leanne Comiskey, Cloyne, Alpha. Black and Comiskey took home three Bassingthwaite bulls for an average of $7333, including a $7500 polled son of Walmona Riccardo.
Also in the top money was the polled ‘S’ bull, Waco K680, which sold to Terry and Heather Elliott, Old Delargum, Moura for $11,000. The Waco Zeus son weighed in at 971kg at 26 months giving the bull a daily weight gain of 1.26kg. Rib fat and rump fat was 16mm and 10mm respectively, while eye muscle area was measured at 122sq.cm.
Mr and Mrs Elliott also bought a two-year-old Yarrawonga herd bull by Yarrawonga Ace for $10,000. The 935kg sire measured 132sq.cm of eye muscle with 11mm rump and 8mm rib fat.The Elliott family purchased six bulls in total for an average of $6167, including a $7000 Yarrabee sire.
After selling their entire draft of bulls, Ken Muller and family, KM Cattle Company, Biloela moved from the sale ring to the stands to purchase a Yarrawonga herd bull for $10,000.
The polled Yarrawonga Versatile son weighed 908kg at 24 months of age with a daily weight gain of 1.28kg. The sire measured 141sq.cm in the eye muscle area - the largest in the catalogue - with a fat cover of 12mm in the rump and 7mm in the rib, and a scrotal circumference of 42cm.
The Hatton family, Diamond H Santa Gertrudis Stud sold Diamond H Ritchie to Moramana Farming, Clermont for $8000, while Robert Hoffmann, Theodore paid $7500 for Cardona Overton offered by the Atkinson family, Cardona Stud. E & E Moller, Jericho also purchased a Cardona bull for $7000, while the Kirby family, Springsure, paid $7000 for a sire from the Yarrabee stable.
The Kirkwood family, Disney, Clermont took home four bulls at an average of $3625 and Hills Agriculture, Moura bought a trio of bulls at $3000 a head.
