THE Emerald store sale yarded 1700 head today, and topping the steers were Robert and Candy Cross, Fermanagh, Anakie.
The Cross family sold Santa Getrudis number 7 steers to average 408c/kg weighing 260kgs and returning $1063/hd, with the top pen making 411c/kg to weigh 270kgs and return $1111.
They also sold heifers to average 321c/kg weighing 217kgs to return $698, with the top pen making 338c/kg.
The Cross family have a mixed cattle and grain operation at Anakie, west of Emerald.
Mr Cross said the herd was predominantly Santas, with a small percentage of other breeds.
They run 250 breeders, and took 57 weaners to today’s Emerald sale.
Mr Cross said they sell twice a year in Emerald, and he was confident in the current market.
“Anyone that’s whinging about cattle prices at the moment are mad,” he said.
The Anakie block is dry, having missed out on recent rain.
