Quilpie’s year-long centenary celebration continued on Saturday when a great crowd gathered for the annual show, displaying everything from fleeces to blooms.
It was the first time the show had been held at the new Bulloo Park complex, which was full of colour for a day of action.
Shire mayor, Stuart Mackenzie, said the show was the latest in a series of events that had been taking place since April, which the community had supported well.
“Wool is back in the spotlight – it was an important part of the district for so long and it’s great to see this rejuvenation,” he said.
His property, Plevna Downs, was the major winner in the wool pavilion, collecting grand champion fleece, fleece of highest commercial value, elite fleece, best strong wool fleece, and most successful exhibitor ribbons.
Adam Murray, Belombre, had the best medium fleece of the show, and show president, Bill Watts, and his property Wynburn, had the best pair of fleeces.
Mr Watts said it had been great to see as many local fleeces – there were 54 – on display as were shown at the Ekka.
“It’s not the same as our heyday in the 1980s but it’s a pretty good effort,” he said.
