The 5th Annual Coolabunia Classic Charolais Bull sale, held at Coolabunia on August 17 was conducted by selling agents Aussie Land & Livestock, Kingaroy.
Graham and Katrina Blanch, Charnelle Charolais, Gatton, had their best bull sale ever after 25 years of stud Charolais breeding under the Charnelle brand. Their star Lot 31 Charnelle Louis (P) L73E made the top money of $20,000 when he was knocked down to Roderick Binny, Glenlea Beef, Coffs Harbour.
Glenlea Beef stud principal Roderick Binny inspected Charnelle Louis (P) 3 weeks prior to sale on property and specifically attended the sale to purchase the homozygous polled sire. Glenlea’s stud herd is based in New England, NSW with larger pastoral holdings in western NSW. The Glenlea Stud Charolais herd is one of the early Charolais studs in Australia, originally based in Tasmania, with Glenlea Genetics influencing stud and commercial herds right across the country from Emerald in QLD to Bunbury in WA.
Roderick said: “Charnelle Louis’ total outcross bloodlines to all Australian Charolais, perfect balance of muscle and fat cover, weight for age and docile temperament, along with great EBVs, below breed average birthweight to above breed average growth and carcass traits as well as a 100pc dehorning homozygous polled bull, makes him a very valuable genetic package.”
The sale stats backed up his judgement with Louis, aged 19 months, weighing 800 Kgs, EMA 137, fat of 10/7, IMFpc 4.6 SC 38 and semen morphology of 94pc.
Glenlea Beef along with stud partners in the bull Orara Waterfall Charolais, Troy Blackman are excited to join the bull to both studs’ elite females. Orara Waterfall Stud was established in 2013 overseen by Mr Binny and has developed a high-quality stud herd along with supplying premium grassfed Charolais beef via their own farm based branded beef program. Mr Blackman was voted Australian Young Farmer of the Year in 2016 for his rapid development of both the cattle herd and free-range egg enterprise based on fully sustainable farming practices, situated west of Coffs Harbour in the Orara Valley.
Charnelle Charolais has negotiated a quarter semen share deal after the sale in Charnelle Louis to enter in to a joint venture with Glenlea Charolais to market his semen.
The Coolabunia Classic Bull Sale sold 41 bulls to a solid but selective market despite seasonal conditions being very dry in most areas and cattle prices softening in recent weeks. The sale was an overall success with the average price up over $1000 from last year’s average of $4677 to this year’s $5700. 41 bulls sold this year against last year’s 45.
