A gallery of southern Queensland and New South Wales buyers were in attendance at the second annual Southern Downs Angus Bull Sale on Saturday.
A total of 28 lots of quality Angus bulls went under the hammer with a total of 24 head sold to achieve a clearance rate of 86 per cent.
Bull sale agents George and Fuhrmann, Warwick said the three studs participating in the sale, Clunes Crossing Angus, Lode Creek Angus and DSF Angus, put an excellent draft together of high quality Australian and United States of America Angus bull genetics.
The bull sale’s top price went to lot 11, Clunes Crossing Lazarus L19, who reached $8000 during a bout of spirited bidding from the buying gallery and was owned by Andrew Bryant and Francesca Webster, Clunes Crossing Angus, Dalveen. The lucky buyer was Don Marshall, Heather Brae, Greymore who will now put the sire to work in his commercial cattle breeding herd.
“I’m aiming to turn weaner cattle off quicker and I believe this bull’s early maturing growth will add the boost I’m looking for to help improve the faster turn-off of weaners,” Mr Marshall said.
“I’m starting to put my bulls out earlier now, around September, and like to wean calves in April or May onto an oats crop to prepare them for sale.
“I sell my weans to different cattle producers and feedlots across southern Queensland and northern New South Wales.”
The 21-month-old Clunes Crossing Lazarus L19 bull weighed 800 kilograms with a 40 centimetre scrotal measurement.
