Queensland’s first public auction of Australian White rams will be held at the Stanthorpe Showgrounds on September 1 from 1pm.
The inaugural Stanthorpe Australian White Ram sale will comprise of 80 purebred Tattykeel-blood rams being offered by South East Queensland vendors Mark and Angela Davey and family, Springdale Stud, Stanthorpe and Murray and Helen Schroder and family, Keilah Stud, Inglewood.
Mr Davey said they both started out using the breed when searching for a hybrid to suit their Dorper’s, and the “Australian White’s suited that niche very well”.
“About three years ago, Murray and I each purchased a couple of Australian White rams, and we were overwhelmed with their hybrid vigour, growth rates and the lambs that were produced.”
“We began looking for stud ewes ourselves, and the opportunity to purchase some from Castlereagh Stud arose; we also bought pure Tattykeel rams from the Gilmore family.”
He said the rams being offered in the sale are the culmination of a highly successful embryo transfer program which they both began in January, 2016.
“We’re selling the best of the best of the rams, and retaining our ewes to further develop our studs.”
Mr Davey said the idea to hold the sale in Queensland, was something they both had in mind from the very beginning.
“From what the selling agents have told us, there have been quite a few enquiries about the sale from prospective buyers within Queensland, so we’re optimistic that we’ll have a good turnout on the day.”
He said he’s very excited that 2017 ALPA Young Auctioneers Competition winner and Calgary Stampede International Livestock Auctioneer Championship Rookie of the Year, Lincoln McKinlay, TopX, will be selling their rams on the sale day.
Breed co-founder Graham Gilmore, Tattykeel, Oberon, NSW will open the Stanthorpe sale, detail the Australian White’s origins, highlight the optimism surrounding the breed and its future potential.
Elite Livestock Auctions will provide their live-streaming service during the day, providing an opportunity for people unable to attend the sale in person to watch the action unfold and/or make bids. The rams catalogued are available for inspection from 10am on the morning of the sale.
Mr Davey said hard copy catalogues will be available through sale agents by August 18, and information on individual lots may be available earlier on the Elite Livestock Auctions sale page.
