Heat and humidity did not hinder the enthusiasm of the next generation of young cattle producers at the Braford Junior Stock Show on the weekend – better known as Hoffy’s Youth Camp.
The long-standing weekend of adventure and learning for young people in the cattle industry organised by a group of enthusiastic Braford breeders with Robert and Lesette Hoffman at the helm saw 23 children in attendance.
What started out as a weekend at the Hoffmans’ Downfall Creek property many years ago has now grown into an annual pilgrimage to the Wandoan Showgrounds for young people from all cattle breed backgrounds.
While there are many junior stock shows or camps to fulfil the demand for knowledge by the thirsty youth of the current cattle industry, experienced cattle industry leader Marty Rowlands said the Braford Junior Stock Camp had some unique characteristics which added to the amazing atmosphere of the weekend.
While in past years at the camps there have been guinea pig races and even an authentic wild pig turn up to be chased by the eager youngsters, this year saw the return of the popular yabby race to keep the young and young at heart on the edge of their seats during the night program.
With a custom-made race track provided, popular thoroughbred racing enthusiast Larry Acton cheered on his new starter to produce a better result from his yabby than some race horses he has owned.
Youth from as far away as Casino, NSW, and Rockhampton were keen to learn from the huge bank of knowledge provided by astute cattle men and women during the few days.
All facets of cattle showing were covered plus commercial heifer selection through to presentation and livestock photography.
The camp gives the opportunity for the young participants to be part of setting up their hypothetical cattle studs for a few days just as they would if they were at a show with them taking responsibility for their animals for the entire time.
While providing a small competition at the completion of the weekend, this camp focuses on learning and participation of all in attendance.
With tremendous support from seedstock producers from many breeds and locals, the camp provides fantastic role models who are actively involved with the children all weekend to share their knowledge.
The camp could not continue without the generous sponsorship that is received from Braford breeders, Deb’s Catering, Riverina Stockfeeds, Bushlander Motel Wandoan, Elders Wandoan and Western Downs Regional Council.
