A new on-property Limousin bull sale average was created by Jon and Leny Gaffney, Graneta Limousin and Angus Stud, Bell, when sold 40 bulls for an overall average of $8225, last Friday.
The overall sale average was higher than previously set by Limousin breeders, and the result certainly outweighed the Gaffneys expectations.
“We are really ‘ecstatic’ with the result, and it was pleasing to see many repeat buyers operating,” Mr Gaffney said.
“We sold the same number of bulls at our first sale held last year, and this year’s average is up by $1700, on last year’s result of $6525.”
Topping the sale was the red Limousin Graneta King-Billy K38 (PF), who was widely regarded as the lead bull of the catalogue.
Graneta King-Billy sold for $16,000 to large-scale commercial producer Mark Wilson and family, Banana Station, Banana. At 24 months, Graneta King Billy weighed 845kgs, and EMA of 143sq sm, and fat scores of 13mm and 8mm respectively, and is a son of Mandayen Fortune F1606 from a Mandayen Sapphire female family.
A repeat buyer, Mr Willson will use Graneta King Billy over Brahman and Brahman cross breeders.
“We bought Graneta-bred bulls last year, and are very happy with the first of the calves we now have on the ground,” Mr Wilson said.
“We will pick the top steers from this sire, to exhibit as show steers.”
Mr Wilson also paid to $11,000 for the red Limousin bulls Graneta Kung-Fu, and the same money for the black Limousin Graneta Kingdom.
In all, Banana Station finished with five bulls to average $10,200.
GDL stud stock manager, Harvey Weyman-Jones acted on behalf Vaughan Klein, Wellington, NSW to secure the polled double-black Limousin Graneta Kit-Kat K45, at $12,000.
Graneta Kit-Kat weighed 872kg, and an EMA of 146sq cm, and fat scores of 11mm and 7mm respectively.
Weeoomba Pastoral Company, Dalby, paid to $11,000 for the black Limousin Graneta Klassic K13, and $6500 for the Limousin/Angus bull Graneta Klinger K13
Also putting a solid floor in the market was repeat buyer Cameron Hudson, Maranoa Downs, Mitchell.
He was operating for himself, and also on behalf of his parents John and Lyn.
Mr Hudson finished with two bulls paying to $10,500 twice.
He selected the black Limousin bull Graneta Kookaburra K26 (PU), a son of Mandayen Easy Rider, and paid the same money for an Limousin/Angus bull Graneta Kibbles K10, also a son of .the highly sought after Mandayen Fortune F1606.
Using a different bid card Mr Hudson put a line of 11 bulls together, bound for Maranoa Downs on behalf of his parents.
Maranoa Downs paid a top price of $9500 for the Maranoa Downs draft, and an overall $7045 average, and all bulls will joined to Droughtmaster cross cows.
The Flower family, Biggenden finished with two bulls, and paid a top of $10,000 for Graneta Karl K47, another scurred son of Mandayen Fortune K1606. The Flowers also paid to $7500 for the Limousin/Angus Graneta Leather.
Also paying to $10,000 to secure the polled red Limousin bull Graneta Koala K21, was the Bowden family, Tackeracka, Moura.
The price tag of $9000 was achieved on three occasions. First to sell was the red Limousin bull Graneta Kickass K28, by the home-bred sire Graneta El-Salvadora who was selected by Crescent Pastoral Company, Springsure.
Kenneth and Tanya Faulkenhagen, Tanview, Boonah, bought the 19-month red bull Graneta Lacquer L12, another son Mandayen Fortune F16066,
The Wheeler family, Nebo took home Graneta Leopard L6, a polled son of Mandayden Horseman H2241. They also paid $6500 for the black scurred sire Graneta Lifesaver.
Mr Weyman-Jones said the Graneta sale created a Queensland record last year, and it’s pleasing to see it go one better, and claim the Australian on-property average.
“This result was achieved on the back of support from commercial cattlemen, and the bulls were first-class” Mr Weyman-Jones said.
