IT IS no secret that the Goondiwindi and Meandarra regions have had a lot of rainfall lately – but one bug checker got the fright of her life last week when she found a yabby under the canopy.
Bec McMillan, a bug checker for MCA in Goondiwindi, said in the last week she has twice found yabbies in chickpea crops.
“I was just checking for grubs and disease in the chickpeas as there’s a lot of that at the moment, and I was right there under the canopy looking for disease and it was sitting there looking at me,” Bec laughed.
“I put it on Facebook and pretty soon everyone was talking about it – it was about 500m from the closest river or dam, so he’d come a little way.”
Bec, 26, said plenty of farmers in the region are still hoping for their chickpea crops to dry out, with a lot of wet weather causing concern.
