There was strong support from fellow stud breeders at this year’s Huntington Charbray and Charolais Sale, where Charbray bulls sold to a top of $25,000.
Vendors Luke and Matt Welsh and their families, Taroom, sold 58 Charbray bulls to average $6474, and six Charolais bulls to top at $6000 and average $4083.
The top-priced bull, Huntington Levi (P), attracted some fierce bidding early in the sale and it was eventually knocked down to Bill and Julie Lewis, Diamond Dove Charbrays, Monto.
The 21-month-old weighed 876kg, recorded an EMA of 136 square cm, an IMF percentage of 4.9 and measured 40cm in the scrotal circumference.
Mr Lewis said he admired the polled bull for his overall appearance.
“This is a real bull. We’ve been buying at the Huntington sale for a number of years and the genetics have always served us well,” Mr Lewis said.
The second top-priced bull came in lot 56, Huntington Lovell. Buying the 18-month-old Huntington Fabek son for $22,000 was Trevor and Lolita Ford, Wattlebray Charbrays, Chinchilla.
The young sire weighed 696kg and measured 38cm in the working department.
He scanned 129 square cm in the EMA and an even 10mm at the rib fat and P8 sites.
Mr Ford, who sold the top and second top-priced bulls at the recent Charbray National Sale, said he was excited to put Huntington Lovell into his stud operation as he was a bull that “ticked all the boxes”.
“Our aim is to continue breeding quality bulls to sell at the National Charbray Sale,” Mr Ford said.
And while the stud breeders certainly kept the bids flying thick and fast, the commercial producers were hot on their heels to secure quality sires for their operations.
Randall and Tanya Ziesemer, Beaumont Grazing, Taroom, secured the 20-month-old Huntington Lorenzeo for $18,000.
The Hoare family, Rockview Cattle Co, Bluff, took home the $16,000 polled Huntington Leeward bull, while DA & DM Terry, Old Robin Hood Station, Forsayth, paid $15,500 for Huntington Jagger (P).
Other highlights included KC & CM Lindlay, Spring Villa, Wowan, taking home three bulls to average $7833.
Their draft included the polled Huntington Kelly sire for $14,000.
BL & DE Zeimer, Mt Larcom, paid $14,000 for Huntington Lancelot (P/S), while Chris Cronin, Nellyvale Station, Bourke, NSW, took home Huntington Jackpot (P) for $12,000.
Mr Cronin secured five bulls on the day to average $7000.
Matt Welsh from the Huntington stud said the family was over the moon with Tuesday’s sale results.
“One of the biggest positives for us, and also for the Charbray breed itself, is that people are embracing what we are doing and are chasing the extra consistency that the breed has developed and can offer,” Mr Welsh said.
“Our sale comes off the back of a very successful national sale, where a lot of our clients enjoyed success.”
