Daniel McIntyre took home the Jackie Howe Festival of the Golden Shears Invitational trophy and $10,000 for the third time on the weekend, coming out ahead in both quality and time, with a total time of just over 11 minutes and 30 seconds.
McIntyre said it had been a mental challenge to push through and win the trophy.
“In an average day in the sheds we might shear up to 200 sheep, so physically, shearing eight isn’t that hard. But it takes mental strength to win this competition,” he said.
McIntyre was back to the shearing sheds this week before the national championships in four weeks time.
The trophies for competitors this year were made by Jackie Howe’s granddaughter Mary Howe, from reclaimed materials from the shed where the legendary shearer achieved his unbroken record.
The woolhandling trophy went to Tara local, Erin Fry.
