Lawsons Angus notched up their highest Queensland sale average when they offloaded 51 bulls for an average of $7764 at the Roma Saleyards on Friday.
Stud principals, the Lawson family, who also host sales in Victoria, NSW and Western Australia, were on hand to see their entire offering clear under the hammer.
The top price bull, Lawsons Novak K368, was purchased by the Crowther family, Harrow Grazing, Injune, for $12,000.
Weighing in at 828kg, Novak K368 boasted one of the highest scrotal measurements in the draft at 43cm.
Sired by Lawsons Novak E313, the top price bull was in the top 15 per cent of the breed for the heavy grain fed index and marbling (IMF).
His only purchase from the sale, buyer Andrew Crowther said Novak K368 would be put over Santa Gertrudis cows at Harrow, one of the family’s three properties.
“We were in the market for a good sire bull with good constitution like he has, good fertility, good size and weight for age – he ticked all the boxes,” Mr Crowther said.
“He’ll go over some Santa Gertrudis breeder cows. We run Santa Angus cross cows, but we also run a Santa Gertrudis herd, and he’ll go over those.”
Mr Crowther has recently purchased both Santa and Angus bulls and will use the Angus over his Santa heifers, and Santa bulls over any Angus heifers.
With 1500 breeders across the three properties, Mr Crowther said having good, strong and capable bulls was vital to his operation.
Also making double figures on the day, was 24-month-old Lawson Bartel K1750, who was the sole purchase for Wayne and Karen Brown, Ardentrive, Roma, at $10,000.
At 796kg, Bartel K1750 had a scrotal measurement of 41cm and was ranked number two in sale for the heavy grain fed index (GRN) and was one of the highest marbling bulls in the sale draft.
The volume buyer of the sale was Paraway Pastoral, Rocklands, Camooweal, who continued their blitz of southern Queensland Angus sales, buying ten bulls for an average of $7550.
Paraway had also been the volume buyer at the Hazeldean Angus sale the day prior.
Rob and Leanne Moore, Grassmere, Bollon, purchased four bulls for an average of $8750 including Lawsons Bartel K1755 for $9500.
At 686kg, the 24-month-old Bartel K1755 had a scrotal measurement of 38cm and was the number two ranked sale bull for marbling.
The Bates family, Winnathoola, Wallumbilla, also chased quality throughout the sale to purchase four bulls for an average of $8375 while Earle Graze Partnership, Proserpine purchased four for an average of $7875.
Also taking home four bulls was Bylot Plains Partnership, Injune, for an average of $8250.
