THE ALPA Young Auctioneer of the Year for 2016 is Jake Smith, Landmark, Roma, and he said he couldn’t be happier.
Coming in second was another Roma local, Lincoln McKinlay, TopX, Roma, who also performed well this morning.
With nine young auctioneers vying for the top spot, Jake said he was very humbled to be named the winner.
“There’s been a lot go into it,” Jake said.
“It’s probably only been about four years since I really put my mind to it.
“My father was a stock and sales agent, so that’s how I got into it.”
Jake said the “stiff” competition said he did not go in expecting a win.
He grew up in Gunnedah in New South Wales on a small property, and said one day he hopes to own his own.
“That’s the aim in the future,” he said.
“I’d probably have shorthorn cattle, I just like the shorthorns – I always have.”
Jake’s parents made the trip up from New South Wales, and he said there was a few tears from his mum after the win.
“Mum’s a bit emotional yeah, a few tears,” he said.
“I’ve got my brother here too, he’s a contract musterer out west.”
Jake has only entered the competition once before.
