Cane toads introduced
1935 was the year that Bufo Marinus - the cane toad – was introduced to Australia to combat cane beetles.
A closed-in gazebo was constructed at the Meringa farm of the Queensland Bureau of Sugar Experiment Stations, at Gordonvale, and 101 toads – 50 males and 51 females – were introduced from Honolulu.
On July 4 the first toads bred in captivity in the world hatched, and 2400 toads were released into the Little Mulgrave River on August 19.
