MORE than 250 riders from across Queensland and New South Wales descended on Taroom for four days last week for the Pony Club Association of Queensland (PCAQ) 2014 state formal gymkhana, sporting, campdrafting and mounted game championships.
Riders travelled from as far north as Innisfail, and from Longreach in the west.
Taroom Pony Club member Edwina Keating said it was good to see such dedicated riders and families making the long trip.
"It was great to see the local riders and host zone strongly represented as well," Mrs Keating said.
"Zone five, which is based around Taroom, won the highest zone team on both the campdraft and formal gymkhana days, and we're proud of several riders from Taroom who made it into state teams.
"We had about 388 horses and it was a big effort to stable them all.
"We couldn't have run the event without the help of past and present members of our club, parents from our zone and others, the PCAQ officials and and local sponsors," Mrs Keating said.
The Taroom Pony Club has been operating for more than 50 years, and has hosted a number of different state finals during that time.
This was the third time for the club to host these particular events, with the last championships being held in 2005.
