A FANTASTIC afternoon and evening of fashions, racing, laughter and dancing, the 8th annual Moonie Yabbie Races proved again to be a brilliant event enjoyed by every generation.
After a night of much needed rain, the sun came out and shone bright as the crowds rolled in to this year’s annual Santos Moonie Yabbie Races last Saturday. 300 punters
turned up for the six-race afternoon, a fundraiser held for the local Sports Club.
From the littlies on the giant jumping castle, the serious punters in the yabbie arena, the stylish women strutting their impressive fashions, and the gents relaxing by the bar following a busy harvest – this was an event that united the community.
The MC for this year’s event was Pittsworth’s Greg Ireland, who kept the crowds laughing from the beginning to the end, sharing his yabbie insight on the favourites and the roughies.

A new addition to the event this year was the mock bookmaker set up, ‘moonieyabbiehouse.com’ selling $10 sweep tickets from local resident ‘Porky Borchardt’ who was dressed up to match the part, complete with his own board and Gladstone bag.
The final race was fast and furious, with Burke Royale taking out the title for 2013. The syndicate owning the champion yabbie was a group of Moonie’s older locals, naming themselves The Islanders.
They were later presented with the Dalby Rural Supplies Cup and took home a fantastic $1000 prize.
Other prizes raffled during the evening included the highly sought after Glenmar $1000 fuel voucher won by Hannaford’s Fiona Maher and her mum and the Mooloolaba’s Newport holiday, this year to be enjoyed by Amy Urquhart and her grandmother Rhonda.
Toowoomba stunner, Emily Cowly was best dressed lady in the fashions on the field, while Goondiwindi’s Wayne Morris took out best gent. The best couple was awarded to Moonie locals Sam and Georgina Baker.
