PATRIOTISM, mateship and all things Aussie will once again sweep the nation on Monday, January 26.
There are plenty of ways to celebrate and here are eight ways to make sure you have yourself a dinky-di time.
1. Tuck into some home-grown lamb
Country folk have been digging in to their home-grown meat long before Lambassador Sam Kekovich started calling on Aussies everywhere to eat lamb on our national day. So stoke thy sacred fire pit known simply as a 'barbie' and chop it up. Because "the best meat comes from your neighbours' paddock", you'd better invite them too.
2. Enjoy a meat and creek
If you're feeling particularly lavish notch it up a level. Forget throwing shrimp on the barbie and enjoy your lamb with some yabbies caught straight from the creek (or river). This activity can also turn into a 'meet and creek' by taking it to your local water spot. Make some new mates by celebrating the great day with other Aussies enjoying their own meet and creek.
3. Take the bush to the beach
Slip, slop, slap and slide as you show off your iconic farmer's tan at some of Australia's greatest beaches this January 26.
4. Play dirt and dust cricket
If you can't make it to the coast to indulge in some beach cricket, try your hand at a classic game of the dirt and dust version. As with every western backyard cricket game, set the local rules out before playing. Six and out for hitting a gumtree or for knocking over a fielder's refreshment often rates highly on the list.
5. Host an 'Aussie As' competition
If you're as Aussie as vegemite for breakfast or watching cricket all summer, then now is your time to sing True Blue. Host and compete in your own 'Aussie As' competition. Earn the most points through completing a series of challenges - such as thong throwing (judged by distance), downing a cold pie and beer, swimming the river and rolling up a swag - to earn yourself bragging rights until next Australia Day.
6. Sponge away the competition in a lamington bake off
If you're after something a little slower in pace, prove you've got what it takes when it comes to baking. There's nothing like a lamington bake-off to set your old Queensland Country Women's Association (QCWA) friends' tongues wagging.
7. Go camping
Roll your swag out in the back of a Holden ute under the stars at Birdsville or pitch a tent beside the Thomson River. Perch your seat in the river to cool down with a beer or Bundy rum and even try your hand at carp busting. After all, it's about time we Aussies busted those Euro-introduced fish!
8. Listen to the Triple J Hottest 100 count down
Amid listening to the classic hits that had your soul at Tamworth Country Music Festival recently, pop on Triple J's Hottest 100 count down.
