Winning the Ken Crotty OAM trophy for grand champion led steer has confirmed for Murray and Nicole Nicholls that they’re selecting the right sort of steers.
The couple has been competing in the led steer competition at the Ekka since 1993 and have won two jackpots and two live grand championships with their steers, but this is the first time they’ve taken the carcase honours.
“It says we are doing the right thing with muscle pattern, body type and temperament,” Mrs Nicholls said.
“We find breed is not so important.”
This is the first time they’ve shown a Speckle Park breed, on behalf of SN and DN Beaumont at Dorrigo, and they have another at home at Kyogle for a show in Armidale in September.
Their winning steer collected 94 points from a possible 100, earning top points in fat depth, colour and distribution, meat colour and yield, and EMA.
