IT was an early start on Friday morning for competitors in the young judges event, and this year Laurence Sehmish-Lahey, Goondiwindi, took the award.
Second place went to Lauren Moody, and third went to Ivana Fuller.
Under the guidance of judge Troy Setter, Consolidated Pastoral Company chief executive, the young judges had to rank three pens of cattle in the order closest to his selection.
Those who were closest were then able to present their reasons to the crowd.
“When you do your talk, explain why you placed the cattle in that order. If you have a different order to mine, tell me why you made that choice,” Mr Setter said.
“Don’t throw cool one-liners unless you mean it,” he added.
The young judges were advised to look for market attributes of yield, carcase, fat cover and retail value to form their opinion.
