Australia's top Brangus breeders turned out in force at the Royal Queensland Show on Thursday, with a red Brangus taking the glory in the bulls.
Redline Sargent Cortez, exhibited by Kris Dingle, Mally Plain, Redline Cattle Company, Eidsvold, won grand champion bull, while Kraken Miss Bubba, exhibited by Kraken Brangus, won grand champion female.
Sargent is a two-year-old bull by Trio's Cortez and out of Redline 8/244.
He has an average daily gain of 1.22kg, taking him to 896kg on show day, and boasts a P8/rib fat depth of 13/10mm and eye-muscle area of 132sq cm.
The pool of 33 entries was judged by James Pisaturo of Veejay Downs Charolais stud, Inga Downs, Dingo.
Mr Pisaturo said he tried to pick a consistent type of product and Sargent Cortez represented that.
"He's a very industry-focused bull. He's structurally sound and he moves around the ring well," Mr Pisaturo said.
"I really admire the growth in this bull. He may not be the most expressive bull, but he's got plenty of top line in him. He carries that depth down well and carries that back cover right down over that whole carcase.
"I would like to clean him up a little bit underneath, but I think he's still adequate and reproductively sound in that regard and an outstanding representation of the Brangus breed and wider industry."
Kris Dingle said the decision to import and gain exclusive rights to US sire Trio Cortez's semen had paid off.
"He's something we've been striving towards for a long time. He's a pretty well balanced bull and has the power behind him as well," Mr Dingle said.
"That's the first lot of saleable progeny and breedable progeny that have come through from that bull, so we're excited by him and there'll be plenty more poddies yet to come."
Mr Dingle said it was nice to see a range of red and black Brangus in this year's event.
"I'm probably a little bit biassed between the black and reds, but it's nice to see a black cow and a red bull at the top. No one's dominated and the cattle have been equally supported.
"However, it's also nice to see a red get up there as grand champion bull."
In the junior bulls, the champion title was claimed by Dynamite Simba S13, exhibited by Lucy Roche, while the reserve champion was awarded to Duarran Ramiro BB, exhibited by Galloway Cattle Co.
The junior female champion was won by Bullakeana Vo Vo, exhibited by Isabella Hanson, while reserve champion went to Kraken Beth 710S, exhibited by Kraken Brangus.
For the senior bull category, Redline Sargent Cortez took home champion, while Duarran Rocky BB, exhibited by Galloway Cattle Co, was reserve.
Kraken Miss Bubba 541P was crowned senior champion female, while Bullakeana Unaware, exhibited by Isabella Hanson, took reserve.
