An emerging 18-year-old Santa Gertrudis breeder exhibited the grand champion Santa Gertrudis bull in his first Ekka debut.
Clifton's Gus Hutchinson of Ribbleton Santa Gertrudis Stud took home the prestigious award, with his bull Ribbleton Steve.
The Ribbleton stud is owned by Gus's parents Matt and Nicole Hutchinson at Clifton.
Gus said he was "over the moon" with the result.
"There was some pretty tough competition out in the ring, but this is a very surprising result," Mr Hutchinson told the Queensland Country Life.
"We'll never forget what Steve has done for us in spreading our name and showing everyone what we offer to the Santa Gertrudis industry.
"The second bull we brought, Ribbleton Spring Roll, did not place but we are very proud of showing him off."
The champion bull's sire, Ribbleton Humphrey, is sired by the 2015 grand champion Santa Gertrudis bull of Ekka, Wavehill Jager.
Ribbleton Steve will be offered at the Santa Central Sale.
In the female category, Yarrawonga Santa Gertrudis stud continued their dominance in the Ekka showring, winning grand champion female with their senior cow Yarrawonga Kandy R499 (P).
Exhibited by Andrew and Fiona Bassingthwaighte and Co of Wallumbilla, Kandy had two cracking twin heifer calves at foot alongside her.
The trio were presented by Brett White, Megan Kiause, and Cody Voss.
Mr White said the owners picked her out of a few hundred heifers to show at last year's at Ekka but it got canceled.
"They sent (Kandy) this year with her twin heifer calves as they thought she was a young productive showing the best the breed has to offer," he said.
With 83 exhibits nominated, the Santa Gertrudis cattle at this year's competition were the largest breed on the grounds.
The exhibits were judged by Ben Noller of Palgrove, Inverell, NSW.
Mr Noller said the quality of cattle were 'a testament to the breed'.
"I really admired the moderation of the (Yarrawonga) female, her frame, constitutional structural correctness and udder integrity," he said.
"The (Ribbleton) bull had the extra length, the ideal bone structure and natural constitution I'd like to see in a bull."
