With a reputation for producing quality Angus MSA-grade cattle, Meandarra-based Carabar Angus Stud focuses on breeding for superior structural soundness, eye muscle, intramuscular fat (IMF), growth potential, and temperament.

To produce such quality cattle, stud principal Darren Hegarty, has built a world-class breeding program.

"We've achieved this by purchasing top foundation Angus females and heifers, as well as embryos, from Australia's leading studs to establish a world-class female bloodline," Mr Hegarty said.

He said these are Angus bulls that stamp their progeny with superb conformation and performance.

"These attributes are equally important in establishing a quality cattle breeding program. To that end, we have purchased some of Australia's finest bulls, augmenting our own breeding cattle with semen from championship Angus stock from all over the world," he said.

Mr Hegarty bought Carabar, situated at Meandarra, in the Western Downs region of Queensland, 24 years ago, while Abernathy, halfway between St George and Mitchell, in the mulga country, was purchased five years ago, and is where his brother Jason lives and works.

The year after the purchase of Carabar the Carabar Angus stud was established, with the core objective of breeding a large growthy, highly fertile article with positive fat cover. This goal has been achieved on a consistent basis since that time.

"I believe it's the durability and longevity of Carabar bulls that really stands out to our clients."

When founding Carabar, Mr Hegarty sourced top of the line genetics from the Kansas, Lawsons and Booroomooka Angus studs.

"In particular, Booroomooka Tracy T4 (AI) (ET) has been dominant in the Carabar herd. Her genetics are in close to 80 per cent of our stud herd."

Post-drought Mr Hegarty has resumed flushing and transplanting activities utilising Kansas, Lawson and Booroomooka genetics in the studs embryo transfer programs, which Mr Hegarty has run since the studs establishment.

"Only our best females are flushed or artificially inseminated to some of the breeds' top sires."

Carabar has consistently won championships at major cattle shows and has topped the sale lineup at many of Qld's best-known cattle sales

Highlighting this recognition was Carabar Docklands L36 a Docklands D62 son who won champion Angus bull at the 2017 Sydney Royal Show, as well as reserve interbreed champion bull. Later that year he was named champion Angus bull at The Ekka.

His sire Docklands D62, jointly owned by the Kansas stud, has become one of the leading sires in Australia in recent years, with more than 3000 of his progeny having been recorded in 162 herds.

A prime selection of Carabar genetics will be made available on Friday, September 23, from 1pm, when the sixth annual Carabar Angus On Property Bull Sale is held.

Mr Hegarty said 80 first-rate bulls have been catalogued for the sale.

"These bulls possess the superior structural soundness, eye muscle area, intramuscular fat, growth potential, and temperament, that our bulls are well known for."

Progeny by Carabar Wheel Wright M181 and Carabar Lotto N65 feature prominently throughout the catalogue with 16 and 15 of their respective sons selected for the sale.

Shining a light on the longevity of Carabar sires is Carabar Gun Smoke G53, who at 11-years-old continues to perform brilliantly, a fact highlighted by his 10 sons in the sale. Additionally six progeny of Carabar Reality K46 have been selected.

Me Hegarty said the sale has held its appeal due to the durability of the bulls offered in combination with true value for money buying opportunities.

"We've built up a strong following for the sale, with buyers from Emerald, Blackall, Augathella, Charleville, Cunnamulla, and back over to Warrick attending on a regular basis. We're also offering free delivery to buyers situated within a 500km radius of Carabar."

Mr Hegarty said he'll be looking to build on the success of the 2021 sale in which 52 bulls sold to average $14,231, close to double the $7155 paid on average at the 2020 sale.

"I was very happy with last year's result, especially the performance of the junior bulls offered, including Carabar Redcliffe R204, which topped the proceedings at $26,000.

"It was great to see so many repeat clients and a big increase in new faces to the sale."

Those unable to attend in person on sale day have the opportunity to bid online via the AuctionsPlus platform.

The catalogue for the 2022 sale will be available to view on the Carabar Angus website from early September.
