Record November rainfall as Qld launches into wet summer

QUEENSLAND has measured record rainfalls for November, setting the state up for an incredible summer season.

Topping the overnight scores in official Bureau of Meteorology gauges was Sardine Creek in the Carnarvon Ranges with 178mm, Gillespie east of Blackall on 145mm, Fred Haigh Dam west of Bundaberg at 96mm, and Porcupine Creek near Hughenden with 81mm.

BOM says plenty of locations also had the highest daily rainfall for November at sites with more than 20 years of records.

Gillespie's 24 hour total easily surpassed the previous 88.9mm record set in 1932. Terrick Terrick, west of Blackall, had 104.8mm, topping the 86.4mm recorded in 1914. Waddy Brae north west of Injune has 131mm, smashing the 64.6mm received in 2008. Pine Hills on the Western Downs scored 61.8mm, up on the 50.6mm received in 2001. Old Cashmere on the Maranoa River north of St George also scored 70mm, 3mm better than the previous daily record set in 2007.

BOM's has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for an area stretching from Longreach to the border.

BOM also reported it was the wettest November (and counting) for many locations. These included Maryborough, 151 years, Mundubbera, 110 years, Mount Joseph, Yangan, 109 years, Melmoth, 102 years, Byfield Childs Road, 92 years, Glenlands, 90 years, Marnhull, 87 years, Charleville, 79 years, Carnarvon Station, Dunollie, 71 years, Havelock, 65 years, Bundaberg Aero, 63 years, Glenroy Massie, 62 years, Boothulla, 58 years, Tallagai, 53 years, Applethorpe, Theodore, 52 years, Macalister, Bungaban, 49 years, Childers South, 42 years, and Roma Airport, 36 years.

Wet conditions are expected to continue in the far north and the south east on Wednesday (see map below), moving offshore by the evening.

On Thursday (see map below) BOM says a weak trough may extend over central Queensland, while a coastal trough near the south east coast will move well offshore. There is a medium to high chance of showers and thunderstorms in the far north and the south east.

On Friday a high moving into the Great Australian Bight will extend a ridge over southern Queensland.

BOM says there is a slight to medium chance of showers and thunderstorms in eastern and northern districts, increasing to a medium to high chance in the far north. There is a slight chance of a shower or thunderstorm in the south west.
