Limousin breed stalwarts Faye and Alwyn Wolfe of Bundaberg, took out the grand champion carcase judged on the hook and were the most successful exhibitors in 2021 Limo Blockbuster Hoof and Hook competition.
Overall, the competition attracted a total of 122 entries, with exhibitors drawn from Bundaberg to Injune and various parts of south east Queensland.
Competition organiser Geoff Haack, Benamitchy Limousin stud, Gilston, said while previous competitions had drawn higher entries, this year's numbers very acceptable and in line with the current cattle market.
He said the competition was now in its third year, and attracted more higher-grade Limousin-bred cattle than in previous years as the event is open to both purebred and crossbred cattle.
It was a home-bred 18-month-old Limousin steer exhibited by the Wolfes who was bred from a Talana Limousin stud's French Pure bull that claimed the hook victory.
The Wolfes' milk-tooth pure Limousin steer secured the grand championship award with a total 288 kilogram carcase with a 101 square centimetre eye muscle area and maximum points for fat and meat colour, meat texture and eye muscle area resulting in a total of 126.07 points.
The Wolfe family have been breeding Limousins for the past 30 years, but these days have scaled down to semi-retirement and run about 30 breeders in the Bundaberg district.
Reserve champion carcase went to Noel Jennings' pure Limousin steer with a total of 110.1 points.
This year's competition started on April 26 when the 120 Limousin and Limousin-cross steers and heifers were inducted into the Freestone Feedlot at Warwick.
From there they were transported to the Beaudesert Saleyards complex where the Bartholomew & Co staff expertly drafted them into their six weight classes - three each for heifers and steers - for hoof judging on October 6.
Hoof judging was undertaken by Brent Evans of the Jendaview Limousin stud at Kingaroy, who also buys for Nolan Meats. Mr Evans kept the crowd's interest with his comments on the various animals throughout, along with Garth Weatherall from Bartholomew & Co interviewing various competitors.
Mr Evans judged a 500kg high-grade Limousin steer entered by the Thompson Bros from Nanango the champion on the hoof. Reserve champion on the hoof was a 502kg pure Limousin steer entered by Noel Hinton from Maidenwell.
All entries were processed by Teys Australia's Beenleigh Plant, where they were judged on the hook on October 8.
