UPDATE - MONDAY 9PM: Two passengers in the back of an ambulance have died, after a truck collided into the stationary vehicle at Stanwell on Monday afternoon.
Preliminary inquiries indicate just after midday an ambulance was stationary at a roadwork temporary traffic light in the eastbound lane of the Capricornia Highway at Stanwell, when it was struck.
The truck also travelling east, collided with the rear of the ambulance causing extensive damage, pushing it off the roadway where it then rolled. Two passengers in the back of the ambulance died at the scene.
The driver of the truck was transported to the Rockhampton Hospital in a serious condition.
The driver and two additional passengers in the ambulance were also transported to the Rockhampton Hospital where they remain in a stable condition.
The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the crash.
Diversions are currently being set up at the Mt Morgan turn off through Razorback Road and the Burnett Highway at Westwood. The road is expected to be closed for a number of hours. Expect major delays.
MONDAY 4PM: Two people are feared dead and the Capricorn Highway near the Stanwell Power Station has been closed in both directions, following a horrific mult-vehicle crash on Monday afternoon.
It is understood that a truck and an ambulance vehicle were involved in the crash around 12:15pm on Monday afternoon.
Four people, including a paramedic, were taken to Rockhampton Hospital in a stable condition and the RACQ Rescue chopper airlifted a man in his 40s in a serious condition to hospital.
Queensland Ambulance service says the ambulance vehicle involved was transferring a patient between facilities.
